He was brutally beaten to death in October of 1998 because of his sexual orientation. Matthew was gay. Westboro Baptist church, led by Reverend Fred Phelps, picketed his funeral carrying signs reading "no tears for queers" and "god hates fags". Preacher Phelps maintains two websites called "GOD HATES FAGS" and "GOD HATES AMERICA". Phelps speaks what many Conservative "Christians" believe, but are afraid to say in public. To borrow a phrase from Episcopal Bishop John Shelby Spong, Christianity is currently a religion being hijacked by fundamentalists. These people of hate receive constant attention from the news media and paint a terrible picture of the religion based on the love and compassion of Jesus.
